It's official. Johnny Depp is most beautiful as a demon barber hell-bent on avenging his broken family.
Sweeney Todd is an amazing, amazing film - a few hairs' lengths ahead of
Chinatown to earn my love as Best Movie Ever. I won't go on and review it in full-length, here, as there are a number of reviews out there that really hit the nail on the head in their praise of Burton's work, but to those of you who haven't had the pleasure, I offer my own cropped "parapraise":
Todd is more the
Byronic barber of Fleet Street than one possessed or evil. Indeed, the man slits throats left and right and occasionally bludgeons false Italians with teapots, but Depp's brilliant interpretation leaves the viewer quite contradicted, if not fully supportive, emotionally, of Mr. Todd. I for one have never been so invested in a character. The musical parts are very intimate (no city-level chorus shit), and a joy to listen to...I immediately hunted down the soundtrack, and proudly!

Oh, and the cinematography, too - I could rave all day. All in all,
so tragic,
soromantic,
so artistic and fine-tuned.
I want bleed all over it.

I honestly thought I might be the only one who fancied Peter
